Hybrid Operating Suite

Future-Orientated Care

As the regional leader in health care, CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System continues the quest to provide best practices and innovation in patient care with the construction of Texarkana's first Hybrid Operating Suite (Hybrid OR). The investment of $3 million needed to complete the project means patients from our region will benefit from technology that allows them to stay close to home while receiving cutting-edge care- available previously only in larger cities.

The hybrid operating suite is equipped with advance medical devices such as Fluoroscopy and CT-like imaging, which enable the surgeon to perform more minimally-invasive surgery. The technology allows more complex procedures to be accomplished through one or more small incisions, which is less traumatic for patients and contributes to quicker recovery.

For example, the hybrid OR equipped with advance imaging equipment with blood vessels mapping capabilities and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), will allow for minimally invasive repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and other endovascular procedures instead of long abdominal incisions required for open surgery. In the past 30 years, the occurrence of AAA has increased threefold, and the enhanced capability made available through the hybrid OR will offer shorter hospital stays and reduced recovery time for returning to normal activities.

Hybrid cardiac surgery offers significant advantages in the repair of diseased heart valves and the surgical treatment of rhythm disturbances. With the hybrid operating suite, CHRISTUS St. Michael will have future capabilities to perform TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) procedures to replace heart valves instead of the more traditional open-heart method. Considering the Texarkana region reports a higher incidence of heart disease than the national average, the hybrid OR is a wise investment for current and furture-orientatd care.

Beyond the scope of advanced endovascular and cardiovascular care, the hybrid OR offers other noteworthy applications for care in the areas of neurosurgery, trauma, thoracic, laparoscopic surgeries and more. Procedures can include complex spinal procedures and intracranial tumors and other less invasive surgeries that can serve the needs of complex patients.
